What kind of dog do you get for someone who is afraid of dogs?
My boyfriend doesn’t like dogs. I don’t think he’s ever outright said that he’s afraid of them, but he’s had some pretty bad experiences with them, and he says he hates BIG dogs more than dogs in general, so I’m pretty sure on some level he’s afraid of them.
He’s moving in soon with me and my parents, and we have a huge weimaraner and a young standard poodle. I don’t know if he will get along with the weimaraner, he growls even when he’s not mad. It’s odd really, he growls when you pet him… it takes some getting used to. He does get along with my grandparents’ dogs, however – a scottie and a mini poodle. The mini poodle is surprisingly mellow, compared to most.
In a few months, though, we’ll probably be living on our own. To me, a life without dogs is a hollow life. We plan to get ferrets, which in personality are a cross between cats and dogs, and are very intelligent, but still, I don’t know if I can live without a dog. (continued..)
My boyfriend has expressed that he wouldn’t mind having a small dog. The thing is, I HATE small dogs. At least, the average small dog. I have had a chihuahua that I liked, and as I said, I like my grandparents’ mini poodle. But these two were much more mellow than most small dogs I’ve met. I HATE HATE HATE yappy dogs. I don’t know if I want to take all the time and effort to find a small dog that is mellow. It is difficult.
So basically, I’m looking for either a small dog that is mellow or a big dog that is not threatening. I love standard poodles, and I’m hoping once he meets ours he’ll like them too. But other than poodles, what breeds can fit into those two categories?
This isn’t important, but it’s funny. When I pointed out that he liked the scottie, he said, “Well yeah, but that’s not really a dog. It’s half dog, half rug.”

That’s true, spaniels are not small but not big either… and I do love them. But is it true that they have bladder problems?
