All about Scottie dogs? (Scottish/Aberdeen Terrier)?

Question by Alicat 42: All about Scottie dogs? (Scottish/Aberdeen Terrier)?
I want to adopt a dog, not for a while now, but I’m doing my research.

I want to know all about scotties, BUT NOT any wikipedia copy & paste crap. I can do that on my own, thank you very much.

Energy levels

Personalities (I know all dogs have their own personalities but some breeds can be prone to have particular personalities EG Jack Russles tend to be tennacios)

Grooming

Health (Certain breeds can be prone to certain health issues, what tends to be the health concerns for scotties?)

Owners opinions, breeders opinions, and any other information you can offer. Just not copy paste from google or yahoo or ask jeeves or wikipedia or other search engines. Thanks.
I dont want copy and paste info because I can get it myself!!!

I want what people have to say via experience!

If we don’t copy and paste selected things HOW are we going to answer your questions? and How are you going to learn?

Temperament:
The Scottie is brave, alert, proud, confident, loyal and dignified. While friendly and playful as puppies, the mature Scottish Terrier is quite independent and self reliant and can even be quite crusty and stubborn at times. Therefore it is important to start socializing and obedience training the Scottie while it is a puppy and continue through adolescence. Training will be difficult and you will never achieve instant obedience but you can get a reluctant obedience to most commands. Scotties love to play, so make sure you add play and rewards to your training. Scotties seem to think they are large dogs and can be quite feisty toward other dogs, no matter how large. The Scottish Terrier does best with older children. Scotties are aloof from everyone except their immediate family and are not friendly towards strangers. Scotties make good watchdogs. Scottish Terriers do best with experienced owners who have the patience to gently train and bring out the best in this proud breed.

Exercise:
Scotties are sporty small dogs that love to play ball games. They also really enjoy taking their owners for long walks. Scottish Terriers make good apartment dogs and are relatively calm and quiet indoors.

Grooming:
Show dogs need a fair amount of professional grooming including regular plucking and hand stripping of the coat. Scotties coats are kept long for the show ring. Companion dogs can be clipped twice per year to reduce the amount of grooming. The Scottie’s coat should be combed and brushed three times per week with special attention being paid to the whiskers and bottom. Strip and hand pluck the dead hair in the coat and bathe this breed about every 3 months.

Health Considerations:
The Scottie can be expected to live for 12 to 14 years. The most common genetic disease is a mild bleeding disorder called von Willebrands disease. Other common disorders include: eye diseases such as cataracts and lens luxation; atopy (which is an allergy like hay fever); Cystinuria (which involves stones in the urine); pulmonic stenosis heart disease; Craniomandibular osteopathy or Scottie jaw (which is abnormal jaw bone growth), Scottie cramp (leg spasms which don’t seem to hurt the dog); and dental problems. Scottie buyers should insist on seeing the breeding parents Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) test results for von Willebrands disease and Scottie jaw and also the Canine Eye Registry (CERF) recent ophthalmologists report for eye disorders.

How to train a stubborn Scottish Terrier?

Question by : How to train a stubborn Scottish Terrier?
My boyfriend has a 3-month-old male Scottie named Rex. I’ve heard that this type of dog is very stubborn, and in order to train him, we need to have a crate. However, my bf he loves his pup and never wanted to buy a crate because he said that it’s mean to the dog. He lets Rex, a little dog, have a whole big floor…Therefore, Rex pooped and peed everywhere. I’ve told him many times that he needs to put Rex in the crate when he’s still a pup because it would be harder to train Rex when he’s older. The problem is that my bf goes to school and work everyday and won’t be home until about 8 hrs later. No one is home during the day either. Would it be ok if we let the pup inside the crate in a long period of time? I know that dogs never poop where they sleep. So is it ok for the pup to hold it?
We have had him for 2 months now and he’s still not trained at all.

Question by Scottie: Little Dog. Thanks v much.Had my eye on ZR930 but cant find or buy in UK.Has it PAL? Where to buy? Scottie?
Having difficulties in finding anywhere in the UK that sells canon ZR930 + I’m concerned that buying it in US it will not be PAL compatible, let alone shipping charges adding to the cost. Any ideas much appreciated. Scottie

Best answer:

Answer by Little Dog
Looks like the MD110 and MD215 are the UK equivalents. Both have a mic jack – if they are like the ZRs, they will not have manual audio control. This is important only if the audio you needs is REALLY LOUD or really really soft.

A scottish terrier attacked my italian greyhound, should I contact owners?

Question by Nisi: A scottish terrier attacked my italian greyhound, should I contact owners?
My 3 1/2 yr old Italian Greyhound got attacked by a loose dog today while on his leash in the backyard (we were out there as well). I had law enforcement over to view his bite marks and my dogs vet suggested I contact the owners of the dog. I didn’t get a direct comment on that from law enforcement. If I have the dogs owners number should I call them and tell them they need to pay for his medication? Or is that easier said then done?

Best answer:

Answer by UHave2BeKiddingMe
Call them.

You won’t get anything if you don’t ask.

Give them the opportunity to do the right thing, then if they don’t you can take them to court.

Can I use human trimmers on my Scottish Terrier?

Question by Audrey: Can I use human trimmers on my Scottish Terrier?
I can’t afford a groomer since I lost my job. I was planning on cutting most of the hair and then using trimmers to finish the rest. I used pet trimmers before that were pretty expensive– and they were garbage.

Best answer:

Answer by SJ
Yes. I do it all of the time and it has never harmed or been uncomfortable for the Scottish terrier that I had owned. The Scottish terrier cut always came out looking good as well. A close friend of mine owns a Mini Schnauzer (which requires a similar hair style) . . . and it worked just perfectly.

Your dog will be just fine if you use human trimmers. =)

Also every dog pair of trimmers that I have ever bought stopped working after the first use. The human trimmers have lasted me a long while, and I now use them for grooming my Yorkshire terrier. The human trimmers last much longer then the dogs . . . the only thing you must be considerate of is the noise. If your dog isn’t used to the louder noise a human one creates it might freak her out.

What to feed a dog who taking prednisone?

Question by Dana M: What to feed a dog who taking prednisone?
My dear scottie boy is in the end stages of his cancer treatments. He has a month or two at best. The prednisone he takes makes him extremely hungry all the time. His stomach is sensitive and I cannot feed him large amounts or things that are hard to digest. He still eats his regular food, but I must feed him smaller doses more times a day. If there is anyone who has gone through this, or you know of things to feed that will not upset his stomach but help quell this awful hunger I would appreciate suggestions. at this point, he is going from room to room licking the floor and sneaking into the bathroom and eating rolls of toilet paper! Oddly, the paper doesn’t seem to bother his stomach, but these practices can’t be good for him. Most dog treats effect him negatively. Thanks for your help.

Best answer:

Answer by jad62
Check with your vet about food that won’t cause him to terribly fatten which would make problems wors.; and keep the bathroom door shut.
