What is the survival rate of a Scottish terrier diagnosed with heart worms?

Category: QA

Two of my dogs were diagnosed with heart worms today. The oldest one is eight years old, the youngest is six. They hadn’t been showing any symptoms yet so I don’t think they’re that bad yet. We just started treatment and I’m worried about their survival. Should I be worried?

    Dear Janice,
I am so sorry to heart this. First I want to say to you that you do not have to take the guilt on yourself. They have some pretty good things now to help this, so only your vet can really tell you.
My thoughts will be with you, really.
    Sorry,
    Your Assistant

It is going to be a tough road for them. Since you caught it early I hope they will be fine. Hang in there and good luck

What did the vet say about their chances? It really depends on how badly they are infected and whether they have any other health issues. The vet that examined them is truly the only person who can give you a realistic idea of their prognosis. If it is mild, the survival rate is quite high, the heavier the parasite load, the smaller the chances of a positive outcome. Because the treatment for heartworm can be hard on their bodies and it is a potentially fatal parasite, it is very important to use a preventative, so please do make sure you get them on a preventative when the treatment is completed.

    Hi

They should be fine. Treatments have improved over the years. Just follow the Vet’s directions, when they are at home, and before you know it, they will good as new, and getting heartguard on a monthly basis.

    Best of luck,

Scotties have just as good a chance as any other breed.
The mortality rate with the newer treatment is very low but it’s very important to strictly limit the dogs’ activity level. Do whatever it takes to do this!
Think positive thoughts. I think your dogs will probably do just fine.
